Biomarathon 2026: check out our activities

The IBB joins the Flora Biomarathon and organizes two free botanical outings on May 15 and 17

Spring is the best time to rediscover the plants around us, and the Flora Biomarathon is a perfect opportunity to do so. This initiative, promoted by the Spanish Botanical Society, is a major citizen science event to observe, photograph, and better understand the floristic diversity of our surroundings. It takes place across the country, coinciding with the International Fascination of Plants Day (May 18). All autonomous communities participate to achieve the highest number of observations, species, and participants.

This year it will take place from May 15 to 18 and, as in previous editions, the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB, CSIC-CMCNB) joins with two botanical outings to discover local flora up close, with curiosity and, above all, a desire to enjoy the experience.

Our activities

1. Spontaneous plants of the Barcelona Botanical Garden

Friday, May 15 · 10 a.m., Barcelona Botanical Garden

Meeting point: Botanical Institute of Barcelona (entrance via Passeig del Migdia)

Free activity with prior registration (limited places). Link here.

2. Native and non-native plants of Olla del Rei (Castelldefels)

Sunday, May 17 · 11 a.m., Olla del Rei, Castelldefels

Meeting point: UPC Castelldefels Campus, in front of the entrance to the Pius Font i Quer university residences.

Free activity with prior registration (limited places). Link here.

What do you need to participate?

You only need a mobile phone with the iNaturalist app installed. During the outings, we will observe plants, take photographs, and upload them to the app. No prior knowledge is required: the iNaturalist community and artificial intelligence help identify what we observe. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, bringing water, suitable footwear, and sun protection.

You can also participate on your own, from anywhere, during the days of the Biomarathon. Every observation counts and contributes to collective knowledge of flora!

Why are your observations important?

Once validated by other iNaturalist users, observations are incorporated into global scientific databases such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

This makes it possible to study the distribution of threatened species, the effects of climate change on flora, and the spread of invasive plants. In other words, you contribute directly to research and biodiversity conservation.
