IBB commemorates 11F with the talk ‘Científiques extraordinàries’

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB, CSIC-CMCNB) organizes a public event to highlight the role of women in scientific research

Creu Casas, who pioneered the study of bryology in Catalonia, is featured in this photo taken during a botanical expedition in the 1930s by IBB, CMCNB-CSIC.

Researcher Sònia Garcia will deliver the talk «Extraordinary Women in Science», followed by a discussion. The session will review some of the most relevant female figures in the history of science, with special attention to those who excelled in botany and genetics. The event will also reflect on the current challenges faced by women in research and the need to continue moving towards a more equitable and inclusive science.

Date and location: February 12 at 11.00 a.m., Sala Salvador, Botanical Institute of Barcelona

Admission and registration: Admission is free until full capacity (about 20 people). Registration is required by sending an email to comunicacion@csic.ibb.es.

Why is 11F commemorated?

On February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed. This date was established by the United Nations to promote gender equality in science and technology and to highlight the contribution of women to these fields.

Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in many scientific disciplines, especially in decision-making and leadership positions. This day aims to recognize the contributions of women in research, inspire girls and young people to pursue scientific careers, and promote a more diverse and inclusive science, where everyone has the same opportunities to participate in and lead scientific projects.
