To mark Pride Month, the Botanical Institute of Barcelona wants to stand up for and celebrate diversity in all its forms. Diversity is not only at the heart of our scientific work but also among our core values as a public institution committed to building a more inclusive and just society.
In front of the IBB building stretches an urban meadow, unique in Barcelona for the richness and abundance of the species it hosts. This space, the result of collaboration between our institute, friends of the botanical garden, visitors, and others, has become a refuge for plants and insects, a venue for various activities, and a living laboratory that shows how shared management can generate real solutions. The biodiversity it harbors reminds us that variety and coexistence are essential both for ecosystems and for societies.
Inside the center, diversity is also reflected in our research lines. From studies on evolution and genomics to work on the conservation of historical, floristic, or ethnobotanical heritage, as well as paleontology, taxonomy, entomology, biological invasions, and ecology, our center brings together diverse scientific profiles who collaborate to expand knowledge and address the challenges of the present and future. This richness of approaches not only strengthens our research—making us a leading institution in the study of biodiversity—but also allows us to build bridges across disciplines, generations, and communities.
Just as the most diverse ecosystems are those that best withstand disturbances, human groups that value and nurture diversity—whether natural, cultural, gender-related, professional, or functional—are also more resilient, creative, and empathetic. During this Pride Month, we celebrate diversity as a driver of innovation and scientific excellence.
